Blood is Blood
By Will Thomas

Reading a new installment of a series is always exciting.  You connect with old friends and familiar characters.  Changes are coming about at the Enquiry Agency run by Cyrus Barker and his assistant, Thomas Llewelyn.  Surprisingly, most are not brought on by the explosion that knocked the floor out from under the two detectives.  However, with Cyrus in hospital suffering a crushed leg, Thomas has his hands full to deduce who the culprit or culprits responsible for this disaster and things get more complicated when Caleb Barker shows up on the agency’s doorstep.  With his wedding mere days away, Thomas finds himself trying to tie up this case quickly but others have different ideas.

As a lover of historical mysteries, the Barker & Llewelyn series hits all the marks.  In the latest, Thomas gives Llewelyn the lead and manages to keep you guessing.  This novel has more turns, twists, and dead ends than a hedge maze.  Along with these he tosses in the upcoming nuptials of Llewelyn and his lovely Rebecca.  This is an engaging and exciting novel.  It is filled with characters that are both quirky and serious in their endeavors.  Don’t let your guard down.

Thread Herrings: A Mainely Needlepoint Mystery
by Lea Wait

Angie Curtis’s friend and antique dealer, Sarah Byrne, has invited her along to her first antique auction.  There are several very nice antique needlepoints at the auction but a heavily damaged coat of arms catches Angie’s eye.  She’s the only bidder on the piece and when she removes the frame from it she discovers a document that will lead to murder and put her life in danger.

I have enjoyed every sojourn into Haven Harbor, ME.  Wait’s cozy mystery series gives you a community you wish you were a citizen.  However, she’s not above bumping off one of those you have become familiar.  Even though it is considered a cozy, the events can be very dangerous.  She’s not afraid to put her protagonist into harms way. I’m always sad when one comes to an end.  The end to this installment seemed rushed to me.  I believe it’s because I read the book in one sitting.  I still enjoyed it and want another next week.    #ThreadHerrings   #MainelyNeedlepoint  #NetGalley

The Confectioner’s Guild
by Claire Luana

Wren’s beginnings were rough.  When she was rescued by Master Oldrick and trained in the confectionary shop, she knew she had a special touch when it came to her creations.  Unfortunately, when one of her cupcakes is used to murder she will learn that help and support can come from the most unexpected people and the face of friendship can be hiding evil.

Luana is serving up a fresh and creative fantasy world that will hook fans of all ages.  Her world building is imaginative and wonderous.  The first novel, in a promised three volume series, will not disappoint.  Filled with grandeur and marvels that shadow the darkness, readers will begin this and not put it down until the final page.  She delivers romance, intrigue, and descriptions of confections that make you want to nibble throughout the book.  So satisfying.  Grab it as soon as you can.  Unfortunately, this is currently on available in ebook format.  Hopefully the publisher will release it in print and make it available for everyone.  It is really worth it.

Carols and Chaos
by Cindy Antsy

When Kate Darby’s eyes first set upon Matt Harlow, it alighted a little spark.  What she wanted to keep to a fun holiday flirt slowly turned into a warmth that would run through her whole being.  As the two are tossed into a week of chaotic holiday preparations, they are also taxed with ferreting out the disappearance of a fellow staff member and the mystery surrounding a counterfeit coin.

I’m not sure if this will continue to be a series, but it certainly is a fun duo.  In Antsy’s first installment, Suitors and Sabotage, she introduces us to the Chively, Beeswanger, and Steeple families.  She follows that fun, romantic mystery with this lively addition giving us a peek at the people that run the three households of these families.  It’s a bit Downton Abbey and Upstairs, Downstairs.  Though the teen audience won’t have any recollection of Upstairs, Downstairs, they will delight in this story.  Filled with budding romance and nail-biting tension it will certainly be a great read during the holiday season.  Pour the hot chocolate and bundle up for a very satisfying read.

Little Shop of Found Things
By Paula Brackston

The exciting thing about finding special items in a vintage shop is knowing that item has been around long before you found it and it has a past.  We often must make up a past or imagine what travels the item has been on, but not so for Xanthe.  She has a special gift that allows certain items to ‘speak’ to her.  When she attends an estate sale with her mother, a silver chatelaine calls to her. While exploring the grounds of their new shop, she discovers a small shed like building towards the rear that fills her with the feeling of dread and despair.  Crossing through the door, she is pulled into the past and witnesses the cries of a young girl being spirited away in a coach.  Upon Xanthe’s return to the present, she is confronted by the ghost of Margaret Merton, mother to the young girl Xanthe has just seen.  Margaret threatens Xanthe’s mother’s life if she doesn’t return to the past and help save her daughter.  Carrying the chatelaine with her, she must go back to 1605 and figure out what led up to the arrest of Margaret’s daughter and discover a way to save her, to keep Margaret from harming her mother.
For fans of time travel fiction, this one even mixes in the theme of the ghost.  Filled with adventure and romance, Brackston has managed to check many boxes in the fiction genre. I’m a huge fan of scouring vintage marketplaces for treasures and she even checked that box for me.  This is a very satisfying book to escape into and I will gladly recommend it to teen readers as well as adult.

Hollow of Fear
by Sherry Thomas

Charlotte Holmes, Lady Sherlock, finds herself embroiled with Lord Ingram again as a body is discovered on his estate, Stern Hollow, while playing host to a house full of unexpected guests.

This is my first foray into the Lady Sherlock mysteries and though I enjoyed the overall story, I found myself at a loss often.  This is the third volume and there are references to previous occurrences that are not made clear, leaving the reader to their own devices to fill in the blanks.  The mystery at the root of this volume is cleverly plotted and engaging, but again, it has history in previous installments.  As much as I enjoyed this, I would encourage others to begin at the beginning with A Study in Scarlet Women.  I personally would like to learn what is at the bottom of the animosity Charlotte holds against her parents.  Guess I’ll be adding two more titles to my ‘To Be Read’ list.  This should be added to library collections that contain the first two volumes.

Witch of Willow Hall
by Hester Fox

From the bustling society of Boston, the Montrose daughters find themselves hurried off into the country and the quiet confines of their new home, Willow Hall.  Vain, self-centered, selfish Catherine. Quiet, kind Lydia and spoiled, sweet little Emeline.  Lydia, ever the peace keeper, tries to keep everyone content and thankful for their lovely new home.  Is she happy?  She thought she was, at least content, until disaster befalls them all.  Will Lydia be the one to once again bring peace to her family?  She just isn’t sure if she has the strength to make this happen or the power.

Fox delivers a highly entertaining and tantalizing story in the Witch of Willow Hall.  Her novel begins with the underlying story of family in disgrace and a family with dark secrets.  There is hidden history that has been kept from those who need to hear it.  Though you might figure it out yourself, it doesn’t matter.  Fox keeps the story hooked into you with plight of sweet Lydia and her efforts to extract herself from the toxic influence of Catherine and become her own person.  The hints of the supernatural are subtle and slowly take their place within the storyline.  Older teens who enjoy escaping into a book will gladly crawl into Lydia’s world.  This is one of those novels that sneaks up on you, grabs you and immerses you within the pages so that you have difficulty just putting it down to get a snack.  Pick it up and enjoy the immersion.

The Spellbook of Katrina van Tassel
by Alyssa Palombo

After reading or listening to the timeless tale of the Headless Horseman, has it ever left you wondering what happened to everyone after the storied events?

Palombo’s telling gives us the female point of view through the eyes of Katrina van Tassel.  Filling in the blanks with details of events leading up to the eventful night and follows through with a story that I enjoyed.  I’m not sure where the spellbook fits in but the expanded story is not rushed and is filled with details of Katrina’s life after that storied night of horror and rumor.  Perhaps the spellbook is the journal where Katrina writes down the tales of the village and her own story with Ichabod.  The love triangle of Ichabod, Brom and Katrina will hook romance readers from the beginning but the after story is what gives this book its meat. Giving us an in-depth look at true friendship and how it can carry you through the worst that life can throw in front of you.  The book will be a popular one with older, mature teens and the New Adult readers.  Though the story of the Headless Horseman is one of America’s oldest horror stories, this one will dig further to reveal the reality and horror of human nature and the strength of family and friends.

Read and Gone: A Haunted Library Book
by Allison Brook

Organizing programs for adults is fun and challenging for Carrie Singleton.  Everyone loves sparkling jewels and the presentation by local jeweler, Benton Parr, has an extensive waiting list.  The problems arise when Parr is found murdered in his store and Jim Singleton, Carrie’s wayward father shows up in search of a cache of diamonds that Parr supposedly is holding on to for Jim.

Brook’s second installment of her Haunted Library series is a feel-good holiday story.  This is a perfect book for a light read during the hectic holiday season that you can immerse yourself into to escape.  Don’t be fooled though.  This is a well plotted mystery but it moves quickly.  Pure guilty pleasure.  #ReadAndGone #NetGalley

Deadly Dram:  A Whiskey Business Mystery
by Melinda Mullett

It’s been a year since Abigail Logan put down roots to help run Abbey Glen distillery.  It’s not easy being a woman in the distilling business but she has earned the respect of the men and the industry.  Now Abbey Glen is participating in a prestigious competition to be held at a high-end Scottish resort.  The first night is filled with good food and better spirits, the liquid kind.  As the next day dawns, one of the judges is discovered dead with a bottle of the Japanese whisky next to him.  Abi finds herself mixed in yet another murder and she discovers she is no longer the only woman working in the distillery industry.

This series continues to strengthen as it goes.  Mullett’s knowledge of distilling and the business of whiskey is extensive.  I don’t care for whisky and her descriptions of the aroma and flavor make me want to go pour a dram.  This cozy series is one of the more serious ones and I continue to tell anyone and everyone about it. #DeadlyDram  #MelindaMullett    #NetGalley

Royally Dead
By Greta McKennan

Hoping to get some publicity for her business, seamstress Daria Dembrowski was happy to share a booth with another business owner at the Laurel Springs Highland Games.  As the games begin, it’s apparent there is a rival between participants and things get serious when one ends up dead.  Hopefully Daria can figure things out between her fittings schedule and student lessons or her roommate could end up behind bars.

McKennan’s third installment in her Stitch in Time series is a fun, entertaining mystery.  It’s not heavy and weighted down with details.  Nor does it skip important facts and information.  I’ve not read the first two titles but this one was easy to pick up and become engaged with the characters. Seasoned cozy readers will easily pick up the various clues she drops early on that those involved seem to miss. Even with these little head slaps, Royally Dead is worth the read if you want something light that isn’t going to send you into cardiac arrest.  This installment would also be good for a teen who is looking for something a little more 'mature' to read but doesn't cross the line with gratuitous sex or violence.  There is a young girl, fifteen, that is a key character who is struggling with that gray area of growning up.  McKennan handles the situation nicely.

Girl at the Grave
by Teri Bailey Black

Valentine Deluca has learned to study hard, keep her head down and try to stay as invisible to the others at Drake’s Academy as possible.  She’s only able to attend the school through the generosity of a mysterious benefactor.  It’s her final year and she’s not sure what the future holds for her.  Her past is certainly dark enough.  Living with and looking after her father in the once grand home of her mother.  A mother who was hanged for the murder of Rowan Blackshaw’s father when Valentine was a small child.  Is that what he sees when he looks at her?  A murder’s daughter? The day the vicar approaches her and quietly tells her he thinks her mother was innocent sets Valentine’s life on a road she never thought she would be traveling.

Black offers up a dark gothic tale of vengeance, betrayal and romance that will hook teens from the beginning.  She delivers up a story of a strong young woman bent on setting the record straight regardless of the powerful people who try to stop her.  She is a survivor and readers will celebrate her courage.  This is a good ‘fall into, escape from reality’ reading while addressing issues of self-worth, courage, confidence and honesty. A definite purchase for libraries.

Deepest Grave
by Jeri Westerson

Like any detective, Crispin Guest is always looking for his next case.  When Father Bulthius comes to him with the incredible story of phantoms carrying off bodies from the graveyard he can’t pass it up.  Soon he and his apprentice are witness to this strange sighting as well.  As he begins his investigation, he is asked to take on another investigation.  It involves the seven-year-old son of a prosperous merchant who is being accused of murdering a neighbor and stealing a priceless relic.  The case is difficult and made more so by the fact his former lover is the mother of the young boy.  Time is running out for the boy and for Crispin.  For as long as he is involved with the boy, the emotion he has banked deep within his heart is threatening to go into full flame.

I’ve never read any of Westerson’s Crispin Guest mysteries. I like historical mysteries but don’t usually go back as far as the 1300s.  The historical detail feels well researched and the characters realistic.  The plotting of the story is nicely paced and the surprise twist at the conclusion was very gratifying.  Those who enjoy their mysteries without all the bells and whistles of the modern detection field will find this a satisfying read.

Tiffany Blues
by M J Rose

Set against the backdrop of 1924 New York, Rose has created a beautiful story using color and the bohemian lifestyle of artists and speakeasies as her canvas to create a portrait of Jenny Bell, a gifted artist whose dream is to paint light.  Try as she may, Jenny only creates in monochromatic tones.  Minx Deering wants to help her break out of this pattern by secretly applying for a special artist symposium at Laurelton Hall, the magnificent estate of Louis Comfort Tiffany.  Surrounded by the beautiful furnishings of the mansion, the beautiful gardens and the promise of love, perhaps Jenny can put aside her past and become the artist of her dreams.  Jenny is amazed when Tiffany selects her to model and wear a suite of his newest design of jewelry at an exclusive party.  Little does she know that this wonderful and exciting event will possibly be the unraveling of her life as she knows it.

Rose’s prose truly paints a wonderous landscape using the color of words and emotions.  I have read several novels by Rose and I believe this is at the top of my list.  The research she put into the background of Louis Comfort Tiffany and his estate make you want to hop in your car or jump on a plane and go visit this amazing place of color.  Sadly, it no longer exists but you can still walk the halls and grounds through this novel.  The wonderous renditions of this lost estate almost overshadow the mystery at the heart of the book.  This is excellent story telling.

Bimini Twist:  A Jane Bunker Mystery
by Linda Greenlaw

Jane has been a wonderkin at bringing down the drug traffic in Green Haven, Maine.  However, the temperature is warming up and tourist season is getting underway. The local businesses and city’s politicos aren’t too keen to have the summer visitors scared off by the drug related press, so the sheriff has asked her to cool it on the busts and points her to the cold case files.  Eager to escape she takes on a case of a missing girl who has been working at a local resort on a student visa, unaware it has a tie-in to a cold case from the previous year.

For me, Greenlaw’s books get better with every addition.  Running her own lobster boat pays off big time as she describes the action in and around Green Haven.  Though mystery fans will likely figure out what is going on, the story is still intriguing and well written.  Her descriptions of small town life and how the boating community works is engaging.  As Jane heads out on one exploration, Greenlaw’s realistic description of what it’s like to work a boat in the fog with a good-looking guy and the actual way your appearance ends up is both tragic and hysterical.  (Though I’m sure Jane would disagree.)  This is an entertaining and satisfying book for a good afternoon in the hammock.  Teens who are interested in possible summer work visas could pick up a few pointers from this one.

Murder at the Mansion
by Sheila Connolly

Having just received the news that the hotel she was running has been purchased by a large conglomerate and they wish to install their own personnel, Kate finds herself able to consider a proposal brought to her by her high school best friend.  Her home town of Asheford, Maryland is slowly dying.  The city council has purchased the large Victorian mansion once owned by Henry Barton.  The same mansion where Kate was humiliated by the clique queen and high school nemesis, Cordelia.  Now Cordy wants to take over the mansion and turn it into a high chrome, flashy hotel by ripping out the historical charm that has been painfully maintained with funds left by Barton.   As Kate is finishing up her tour of the mansion with the caretaker, they find the troublesome Cordelia, dead on the front steps.  Can Kate figure out what Cordelia was up to and why she was so interested in the mansion?

Books with storylines that deal with historical treasures hidden in basements and attics are a big draw to me.  Kate’s story moves along though clues and ideas do not come easy.  Connolly does not give Kate a smooth and effortless path to figure things out.  She stumbles and trips like a ‘regular’ person would.  Fans of Connolly’s Museum Mysteries will be happy to see Nell Pratt featured.  My one whine is against reading this book on an e-reader.  It abruptly ended.  I was so engrossed in the story that when the last line came up and I turned the page, I was agog that the book had ended.  I was not prepared.  Needless to say, that last line leaves it wide open for more installments. I will be waiting patiently.

A Word About Summer Reading

With summer around the corner and schools opening their doors and releasing the wild hoards of offspring into the communities, I hope you will lasso yours and take them to your local library to indulge in some summer recreational reading.  What I wish to stress here is the word summer and recreational.  Having worked so long in a public library, I was witness to gaggles of kids embracing the fun time of being able to read what they wanted, what they enjoyed. Mysteries, adventures, tall-tales, and fairy tales.  We didn’t care as long as they were continuing to practice and exercise those reading skills.

Parents!! Nothing will kill the joy of reading quicker than telling your child they must read something classical.  Something of merit, educational.  YUCK!  They get SO much of that nine months out of twelve.  Give them a break and allow them to pick up a graphic novel.  Who cares?  If they are not sitting in front of a television or computer, let them read it.  There are some great authors out there whose works will introduce your child to the wonders of the world through fiction.  Allow them to stretch their imaginations while reading a book of fantasy or science fiction.  (Do you honestly know how many modern contraptions have been developed because of a man who pushed the boundaries of imagination on a little scifi program called Star Trek?)

How many kids have learned how to stand up to bullies by reading Harry Potter?  How many have picked up a biography or non-fiction title because they read one of the Dear Diary series or a Magic Tree House? Summer is a time to rest the brain a little but keep it exercised by reading and exploring realms they don’t see a lot of during regular curricular cramming.

How about this idea?  Why don’t you grab that bodice ripper, who-done-it or spy adventure and join them on the sofa for some page turning escape time?  Order out for pizza and enjoy.  You’ll be so glad you did.

Still Here

Letting you know I’m still around and breathing.  I may not post consistently but I’m always reading a book, listening to a book, all while probably purchasing a book or checking one out of the library.  LOL  I don’t have a lot of followers, nor do I expect many.  Those who do follow my blog know that if I’m not posting here, I’m probably reading.  Now, that reading activity may take place on the shore of the lake, in the parking lot of Home Depot, Tractor Supply or North 40.  Mostly it’s on my patio when it’s warm or in front of the fire when it’s cold.  Yes, I do need to get more exercise and I’m working on that.  Think I might just have to knuckle down and sync my phone to my Bluetooth head phones and my Libby app so I can listen to my downloaded audios without dragging my tablet on a bike or a hike.  (see what I did there?  Uh huh!  A little rhyme time.)   Hang in there, folks.  If you want to know about what I’m reading or have read.  Stay tuned.  (plus, my old laptop died a slow and painful death.)  We’ll be holding services for it at the end of the week.  In lieu of flowers, go to your local indie bookstore or library and give generously in the name of my old technology.  We thank you for your thoughtfulness.

A Sharp Solitude
by Christine Carbo

When attending an author signing, I have often heard the question, “How do you know what to write about?  Where do you get your ideas?”  The answer is always, “Write what you know.”  Carbo does exactly that and does it very well.  Her fourth novel takes us back to Glacier National Park.  Unlike most mystery and thriller authors, Carbo does not have one recurring character or protagonist that is forever falling over dead bodies.  Her main protagonist is the park.  Shrouded within the million acres of breath taking beauty lies a natural system of nature at its best and its worst.  This novel involves Reeve Landon, a man who has decided to live on the outskirts of society choosing the company of his specially trained dog.  Together they round up information and samples to be studied by scientists at the University of Montana.  At the urging of his supervisor he reluctantly agrees to meet with a journalist who has led them to believe she wants to write a paper on their special program.  This simple request will send Reeve’s life and the lives of several others spiraling out of control when the journalist turns up dead after meeting with him.

Carbo provides us with a gripping story that slowly gathers speed. Her characters are well developed and all fit within the landscape of the lives Carbo has created for them.    At the core of the beautiful descriptions of Flathead, Montana and the surrounding landscape she has infused a horrifying trail of events that will leave you breathless and shivering.  The only advice I can offer is, remember to keep breathing.

Spook in the Stacks:  A Lighthouse Library Mystery
by Eva Gates

It’s late October and Halloween is just around the corner.  What better place for tales of ghost ships and scary haunts than a lighthouse converted into a library located on the Outer Banks?  Librarian Lucy Richardson is not a believer but is looking forward to the book group discussion of Sleepy Hollow and the upcoming programs that promise creepy tales of local ghostly legends.  When former resident and owner of the most complete collection of North Carolina historical documents turns up dead in the library it puts a darker spin on tales of ghosts and wrong doings.

I really enjoy books that give hints of ghosts and historical tales.  This one is a little light in that department but doesn’t disappoint in the general story telling.  Gates’ fourth installment in the Lighthouse Library series is a fun read filled with a little romance, spooky ghosts and the feel of autumn in the air.  This series makes me want to visit the Outer Banks. It will be a perfect read in front of the first fire of the season and a cup of hot cider.

Lowcountry Bookshop: A Liz Talbot Mystery
by Susan M Boyer

Private investigators Liz Talbot and her partner Nate Andrews are hired by an anonymous benefactor to investigate the hit and run murder of Philip Drayton and prove the innocence of Poppy Oliver.  Their investigation will have them uncovering a clandestine group that work together to assist battered women and will lead them into one of the most exclusive private clubs Charleston has to offer.

I read a lot of cozy mysteries but this one was a step off the norm for me.  The protagonists were not booksellers or librarians as the amateur sleuths but honest, licensed investigators with a lot of toys.  Considering the many varied directions this investigation goes off on they need them.  There is a paranormal spin in the series in the form of Liz’s best friend from high school who, after one too many tequilas at a party when she was 17, will forever remain 17.  Colleen only appears to Liz and Nate but seldom does so in this seventh installment of the Liz Talbot mysteries. This is a down to earth mystery with several plot twists, regardless of the ghost.

What Should Be Wild
by Julia Fine

Whatever she touches dies. If she touches it again, she can bring it back.  Maisie Cothay has grown up knowing this.  She killed her mother, after all.  She can feel the pull of the forest, the cursed forest into which a few women have disappeared throughout history.   What is the curse of this forest?  Why is her father so worried about her journeying into it? As Maisie grows into a young woman, she decides she can make decisions and finds herself on a quest that could put everyone she has grown to love into serious jeopardy, including herself.

Fine’s debut is dark and mystical.  It begins slowly as the author lays out the foundation of the story and before you realize it the story has buried its roots into you and you cannot put it down or look away from Maisie’s journey.  Teen fans of Alice Hoffman will gladly sink within the pages of this mythical adventure.  Fine has woven romance and a touch of the mystic into a tale of a young woman reaching out to break the bonds of childhood to become her own woman. #harpercollins  #whatshouldbewild  #juliafine

Hollis and Finn are professors married for ten years who have settled comfortably into their routine.  At least Finn thinks, so.  Hollis, on the other hand, is beginning to feel antsy, a need to roam.  When she is approached by a former beau, who is now CIA, to acquire a manuscript believed to be counterfeit, Hollis’s past comes in handy as she pushes her husband to step outside the box and help her out.  As they embark on their little jaunt to Ireland, it quickly becomes evident they might be in over their head and who the ‘good guys’ are is murky at best.

This is a smooth, gentle read that is easy to follow and not stressful at all.  NOT!  It moves along at a steady pace but O”Donohue constantly throws loops and curves at you.  You don’t know who to trust and just as you begin to feel comfortable and think you have figured it out, she tosses you to the wolves.  Good story and a fun read.  I look forward to more adventures with Hollis and Finn.

Chief Inspector Gamache Series
by Louise Penny
Audio Version

I don’t often choose books that deal with contemporary issues.  I’m not a ‘ripped from the headlines’ reader.  If I wanted to read about those issues, I would read them in the newspaper.  I’m finding, however, if I get vested in the characters and the author doesn’t dwell too heavily on the dark themes, I can get involved in the books.  If the author creates characters that are relatable and I can connect with them, I will stick with them.  I don’t like a main protagonist that is darker than the story its self.  Don’t give me a divorced, alcoholic, drug dazed protagonist.

I hesitantly began the Chief Inspector Gamache novels by Louise Penny.  The stories often take place or involve the residents of the small, hidden community of Three Pines located an hour outside Montreal.  If I could, I would move to this fictional community.  I would love to sit in front of the fire at the Bistro and have Gabri or Olivier bring me a cocktail while I read a book I picked up at Myrna’s used bookstore. To overhear the conversation at the next table between Ruth and Clara and try not laugh out loud when Ruth loudly renders her opinion.

Then we have the Chief Inspector of the Suerté-du-Quebec himself, Armand Gamache.  Calm, steady and quick with the wit, he is a rock to his team.  His second in command, Jean-Guy (pronounced Sean-Gee) Beauvoir who is quick to emotion but would follow Armand into the fire if necessary.  Also key to these novels are Armand’s wife, Reine-Marie (pronounced Ren-Marie), and their adult children.  Throughout there are other characters that you will follow through the natural progression of rising through the ranks at the Suerté-du-Quebec.

Ralph Cosham has been the primary narrator of the audios of this series.  He brings Gamache’s calm presence and dry wit to the surface. Each character is given a distinctive personality and you have no problem with conversations between them.  This talent has allowed me to become vested in the characters.  The added plus is an authentic pronunciation of the French names of people and places.

In an interview, Penny stated she didn’t see her series as cozy mysteries.  Granted, cozy mysteries, as a rule, don’t have so much meat within their pages.  I have to agree and disagree with her.  The cozy mysteries I read and continue to the next installment are ones that I’m reading because of the author and the characters.  Her themes are gritty and deal with nasty people but I continue to read them because I feel as if I am catching up with old friends.

Penny is one of those authors who is not afraid to throw her characters into the fray.  After completing one such novel, I had to call a friend who had read the books and scream and rant for a quarter of an hour just to get over the ending of that one.  There have been scenes that drew me to tears.  Not because of a terrible scene but because it was so sweet.

Pick up a couple or better yet, listen to the audios.   I don’t think you will be disappointed.
